Dark Coup The Dark Grid Series Book 3 eBook David C Waldron

I just finished the "Dark Grid" Trilogy.

Thank you, thank you, Mr. Waldron, for a TEOTWAWKI series that's engaging, encouraging, optimistic, and well-edited. The characters are believable-- I have known both civilians and military people of whom your characters remind me.

The tech is also fairly well-grounded, and I can say that authoritatively as a professional RF design engineer, ham radio operator and computer programmer for 33 years. Also, as a gun enthusiast, I can tell Waldron knows his stuff, and there is none of the "Glock cocking" or "bullets" vs. cartridges idiocy you see so much in the movies and TV, and even in books of this genre.

I appreciate Waldron taking the time to create dialogue instead of going the standard route of this genre and just dumping page after page of "background" prose. I'd much rather 'hear' the characters 'talk' about it than wade through some dense encyclopedic text. The dialogue is well-written and not forced. The author uses good continuity techniques. For example, Waldron will transition from one side of a radio conversation to the other location by repeating the last line of the conversation first in the other scene, and identifying the speaking character by their title instead of the familiar first name. This book, I believe, would translate well to cinema or TV.

This Trilogy deserves its place at the top of the leaderboard of the TEOTWAWKI genre, being far superior to the schlock that's being hawked in prepper circles, such as the plodding, atrocious "299 Days" series, the over-hyped "One Second After" by Forstchen, and anything written by John Wesley 'Comma' Rawles. This Trilogy is, I think, even better than (the dated) "Alas Babylon" by David Brin, "Lights Out" by David Crawford, the "Holding Their Own" series by Joe Nobody,or even the unsung "Renewal" series by JF Perkins, which takes away nothing from any of those, because I read them and enjoyed them too.

I am looking forward to Waldron's next effort. I'd love to see something else set in the Dark Grid universe, whether it takes place at Promised Land/Redemption or not. Maybe a story about The Ramirez Gypsies would be fun. It would allow us to get an idea about what happened in the big cities after the CME and the fall of civilization, of which we only got a glimpse from Dan and Marissa

Dark Coup The Dark Grid Series Book 3 eBook David C Waldron Reviews

It's always hard to review a good and/or well written book. How much detail is there to go into? How many details to give is always a question. When a person such as myself reads several hundred books every year, since i was about 11 yrs old, I'm 72 now).

Let's just keep it simple this book was well written, kept my interests, had a good plot (story line), and a lot of fun to read. Somewhat of a mystery, with lots of intrigue.

I would recommend this book to any of my friends or folks who like to read mysteries.
I have enjoyed all the books so far in the series and Dark Coup is no exception. I was a little surprised after reading it to see it was listed as the last book in the series. While I would highly recommend the book and series to anybody I hope there is more. It kind of feels like a TV show that ends on the cliffhanger and is cancelled and you never gets to find out what happened. It seems like there is a lot left to tell in this story but sometimes these things have a life of their own and when they reach the end there nothing left for the author to do. Do not let this dissuade you from read the series it is a good series and well worth the money.
Book number three of a three book series. I purchased the book in POD (print on demand) in my favorite form factor, trade paperback. I do not think that there will be any more books in this series as the author stated that he intended it to be a trilogy from the beginning.

This is definitely a wrap-up book. The Solar CME event has caused great damage and great death due to starvation and violence in the world. But the survivors are rebuilding whcih will take time.
Well, I couldn't give a top rating because there were too many things about this book that put me off. While the author had a fairly positive orientation with the plot and theme (which I appreciated, because everyone should know about them), there were several glaring weak points.

First, There was not enough explanation of the passing references to the previous two books, causing the reader to wonder what he was talking about.

Second, the author attempted to be accurate and realistic about the military and activities. While admittedly not having served, he didn't know the actual military terms and jargon, substituting civilian terms, which is a put-off to military readers. He should have run his proposed actions and descriptions by military who served in combat units.

Third, the dialog among the military was unrealistic, again substitutiong civilian schmoozing. Most of this dialog was unnecessary to the plot and lent an unrealistic atmosphere. The book then became more of a gothic novel snd soap opera, rather than a post-apocalyptic thriller, and could have been narrated faster in 100 fewer pages. There could have been more connecting sentences between actions to improve the flow of the plot.

Fourth, The chapter openings made it hard to get back into the picture until a half page later. The author followed the usual mechanics of jumping among several sub-plots with short chapters, which was confusing. The chapters could have been longer with a chapter subheading to put the reader back into this narrative.

Finally, the characters all seemed to talk the same, in a trite way, repeating, "point [taken)."

That the author knocked the book out in a few months was evident.

However, author Waldrop did make a point to work in some important current political and post-apocalyptic thoughts and considerations. From this standpoint, the book was instructional.
